Objectives and targets

Free education

We want to ensure that all girls and boys receive a full, free and quality primary and secondary education on an equal footing, leading to truly useful learning.

Primary and secondary education

We want to ensure that all girls and boys have access to quality early childhood care and development and early childhood education that prepares them for primary education.

Equal access to technical, vocational and tertiary education

We want to ensure that women and men have equal access to quality and affordable technical, vocational and tertiary education, including university education, for all.

Increase the necessary skills

We want to significantly increase the number of young people and adults with the necessary skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship.

Elimination of gender inequalities

We want to promote the elimination of gender inequalities in education and ensure equal access for vulnerable people, including persons with disabilities, indigenous people and children in vulnerable situations, to all levels of education and vocational training.

Knowing how to read, write and count

We want to ensure that all young people and a significant proportion of adults, both male and female, can read, write and count.

Education for development

We want to ensure that all students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to promote sustainable development, including through education for development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, the promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and the appreciation of cultural diversity and the contribution of culture to sustainable development.

Violence-free and accessible schools

We want to build or adapt schools that are child-friendly, disabled and gender-sensitive and provide an effective learning environment that is safe, violence-free and accessible to all.

Qualified teachers

We want to increase the number of qualified teachers, by working on teacher training in the poorest countries and regions where we operate.

Facts and Figures

Primary school enrolment in developing countries has reached 91%, but 57 million children still donot have access to schooling

More than half of the children who are not enrolled in school live in sub-Saharan Africa

It is estimated that 50 per cent of primary school-age children who are not in school live in conflict-affected areas

617 million young people in the world lack basic skills in mathematics and literacy
